Trailblazers in History
- Viola Desmond (1914-1965): Desmond refused to give up her seat in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Her protest led to her arrest and a landmark legal case that helped to dismantle segregation laws in Canada.
- Michaëlle Jean (born 1957): Jean is a Haitian-born Canadian who served as Governor General from 2005 to 2010. She was the first Black person and the fourth woman to hold that position.
- Donald Oliver (1904-1984): Oliver was a physician and community activist who founded the Black United Front in Nova Scotia. He played a key role in fighting for racial equality and social justice.
- Rosemary Brown (1930-2003): Brown was the first Black woman to be elected to the Ontario Provincial Parliament. She served as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party from 1977 to 1981.
